In 2024 we celebrated Charmaghz’s 6th anniversary and the achievement of 1 million visits from Afghan girls and boys to our Libraries since our inception in 2018. Over half of those visits have been made by girls and most of these children are either critically behind in school or do not attend school at all. Our team firmly believes that access to books opens the door to more than just literacy and is an avenue for giving hope even in the hardest of times.
Since 2018, Charmaghz has faced daunting challenges but has also witnessed incredible growth as an organization, and demonstrated a positive impact among children, parents, and communities. Achieving 1 million visits is a huge milestone for our team and could not have been done without our supporters. Our team has been reflecting on our journey these past six years and on the stories of the children who have visited our Libraries. One such story is from one of our young visitors named Zahara*.
Zahara is a seven-year-old girl living in the area of Dasht-e-Barchi, Kabul. Due to a disability, Zahara is unable to walk, which limits her access to educational opportunities. Due to her disability, she was nervous about leaving her home, which made her father worried about her future. One day, Charmaghz’s Van Library came through her neighborhood, and at her father’s encouragement, she visited the Library.
Zahara loved being surrounded by a welcoming world of books, and her father was relieved to see his daughter happily spend time outside of the house. Thanks to Charmaghz’s supportive team of Librarians, Zahara is discovering abilities she never knew she had. She says she no longer sees her disability and instead wants to focus on developing her talents.
Over the years our team has had the joy and privilege to see children like Zahara blossom into their own unique personalities. The power of stories and access to an encouraging space has a profound impact not only on children but also on their families. Thank you to all who have supported our journey so far!

Charmaghz was founded in 2018 to instill a joy of reading in Afghan children through mobile libraries. Based in Kabul and a registered NGO, Charmaghz grew from the dreams of a group of Afghan youth whose childhoods were scarred by war, and who wanted to secure a peaceful future for the next generation. We believe that a necessary, first step towards that future is ensuring all children can read, write, and do basic math—though currently only 7% of primary school age children in Afghanistan are proficient in these skills. In Farsi, “Charmaghz” means “four brains,” which reflects our mission to expand and fulfill the potential of Afghan children through literacy. Charmaghz was founded and is led by Freshta Karim, an internationally recognized advocate for education and children’s rights.
Our vision is of a future Afghanistan where children are empowered as key agents of change both within their immediate lives, as well as within a long-term dialogue to generate justice, equity, and dignity for all Afghans.
Our mission is to provide a holistic, trauma-centered literacy and numeracy program to every child in Afghanistan that creates opportunities for learners to experience a sense of agency in their daily lives.
