We use a blend of existing digital tools, primarily Google Classroom, combined with live, teacher-led classes. We've chosen this approach because Afghan girls have told us they value the human connection and sense of community that comes with having a real teacher and classmates.

Students receive a certificate of completion from Charmaghz based on attendance and assignment completion, and our secondary school students sit exams to advance between grade levels.
We are not yet formally accredited. We know that accreditation is important to students, and securing accreditation is a long term goal for Charmaghz, once we are well-positioned to invest the required time and resources. However, Afghan students graduating from a non-accredited secondary school are still able to enroll in some regional and online universities that are willing to accommodate the atypical learning pathways of Afghan women.
We strongly believe that online learning is broadly safe for Afghan girls, and that online teaching is broadly safe for our staff in Afghanistan. Our programs are delivered fully online, and the absence of in-person contact is a key measure that keeps our staff and students safe. In addition, we have extensive organizational policies related to security, safeguarding, data protection to ensure that everyone involved with our program is protected. However, given the context of Afghanistan and the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education, our work is not entirely risk-free.
Unreliable and expensive internet is one of the biggest barriers our students face. We provide students with internet credit when possible, offer offline-downloadable resources so students can continue studying during internet outages, and are exploring providing devices like laptops or tablets to students in our most intensive programs.
Our students find us! Student applicants find our programs through girls and families, social media, and partnerships with trusted peer organizations. We have worked in Afghanistan for eight years, and are well-known and respected within community networks.
We are funded through a mix of philanthropic foundations and individual donors who believe in girls' education in Afghanistan. We're actively building relationships with new supporters as the funding landscape has become more challenging since 2021.
